ICWA 2023 

 

We are excited to have Maestro Matthias Bamert and Maestro Ken Lam in our conducting workshop in Italy this August. Our workshop welcomes conductors at any age, and at all levels of proficiency to join.

What we do

  • All levels are welcome - whether you are highly trained conductor, music student, an avid amateur, we offer opportunity to improve for conductors at all levels.

  • Best learning occurs when conductors learn from the world class faculty in a supportive and professional environment where everyone can shine and learn the most out of the workshop in their own paces and paths.

  • Throughout the workshop, students will learn conducting techniques, score study, score analysis, rehearsal technique, and musician interaction - all are important for being a conductor in all levels of orchestras.

  • We are a transparent organization where every conductor gets equal opportunity that best guides their learning progress.

Date: August 10 - 18 , 2023
Location: Cesena, Italy

Basic details:

  • Each conductor will have at least 80 minutes of podium time

  • 7 full orchestra sessions and 4 string orchestra sessions

  • There will be a public performance on the last day of the workshop. All conductors will have the opportunity to conduct in the concert. After the concert, all conductors will be presented with a Certificate for completing the workshop.

  • Video review sessions, with a Baton Skill workshop & a Score Review and Programming workshop

  • Located 15 minutes away from the beach

  • Accessible public transports from major airports in Italy

  • Air-conditioned rehearsal venue for all sessions

  • All podium sessions will be digitally recorded. Conductors must provide his or her own SD Cards. Conductors may bring their own video recording equipment should they wish.

Levels of Participation

  • Full Conducting Participants (limited to 20)

  • Auditing - In Person. Auditing does not include any active podium time. The auditor level is designed for those either who have little experience and training but show promise, but want to use this workshop as a chance to observe master teaching. 

  • Each Conducting Participant will get at least 80 minutes with the orchestra.

  • Daily podium sessions for conducting participants

Concert

We will present a public closing concert at the end the workshop on August 18. The concert will feature all conducting participants.

  • Ken Lam (Director of Orchestral Studies, The Tianjin Juilliard School; Resident Conductor, Brevard Music Centre)

Conducting participants may select the repertoire they want to conduct for each day​.

 

Podium Days 1 - 2

  • Britten: Simple Symphony

  • Elgar: Serenade for Strings

Podium Days 3 - 6

  • Mozart: Symphony No.40

  • Beethoven: Coriolan Overture

  • Beethoven: Symphony No.2

  • Dvorak: Symphony No.8

Orchestra Podium Sessions

  • The orchestra is made up of all professional musicians from Italy who received their education from reputable music institutes.

  • During the orchestra sessions, conductors get to choose what repertoire they wish to conduct in their podium time.

  • Podium time will be equally divided among the conductors, and every conductor gets 80 minutes of podium time throughout the course.

  • All podium sessions will take place in air-conditioned venue.

Discussion / Video Review Sessions

  • In the evening, faculty will have slots open for conductors to sign up for video review and discussion sessions.

  • Conductors have the opportunity to get personal feedback from faculty during breaks, before and after each session, and in video review sessions.

  • Conductors may bring up topics that arouse their interest, such as rehearsal technique, score study, career paths, and more.

Fees

  • Application fee $80

  • ICWA 2023 Tuition $3200

  • If a conductor must cancel his or her spot, the tuition deposit and/or tuition will be refunded only if a suitable replacement is found to fill the spot

  • Fees must be paid according to schedule in USD

  • The application is not complete and will not be processed until the payment is received. 

  • Application fee is non-refundable
